  18. Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server do not recognize the second
  19. processor after you upgrade a Compaq computer from a single processor to a
  20. multiple processor.
  21.  
  22. CAUSE
  23. =====
  24.  
  25. When you install Windows NT on a Compaq computer with a single processor,
  26. Setup installs the single processor version of the hardware abstraction
  27. layer (HAL) and the kernel file. Then, when you add the second processor,
  28. Windows NT does not recognize it. This differs from most multi processor
  29. computers where Windows NT Setup installs the multi processor version of
  30. these files and therefore recognizes the second processor automatically.

  32. RESOLUTION

  35. Follow these steps to install the multi processor HAL and kernel files on
  36. your computer:
  37.  
  38. 1. Restart your computer and boot the MS-DOS operating system.
  39. 2. Copy HALSP.DLL from your original Windows NT install disk(s) to the
  40.    <SystemRoot>\SYSTEM32 directory as HAL.DLL.
  41. 3. Copy NTKRNLMP.EXE from your original Windows NT install disk(s) to the
  42.    <SystemRoot>\SYSTEM32 directory as NTOSKRNL.EXE.
  43. 4. If you plan to use a kernel debugger, copy over the symbols files for
  44.    these files as well.
